ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCH
St John the Evangelist Church is now the only a place for worship in Moggerhanger and Chalton. It was built in the middle of the 1800s and has occupied a prominent place in the life of both the Parish and the village ever since.
Services are arranged by the Church and the Parochial Church Council, consisting of members of the congregation, is responsible for the affairs of the church. The Friend’s of St John’s Church were brought into being to raise funds for the upkeep of the fabric of the church.
The Church organises a number of well established events throughout the year including a monthly fellowship lunch, a harvest feast and the plant sale.
You can see reports on some of the events in the Past Events pages and on the other Church pages.
The church has an interesting organ which was installed in 1891 to replace a previous organ. This second organ was built by W E Richardson. In 2014 a report was drawn up by Michael Young on its condition. You can read an extract from the report here. The report also gave likely costs to keep the organ in a good playing condition:
To re-leather the bellows £ 4,040.00 + VAT
To clean the pipe-work, dust down the organ and checking the actions £ 780.00 + VAT
To provide pipe-work to complete the organ, voiced and regulated to match the existing pipe-work
Great Principal £ 840.00 + VAT
Great Fifteenth £ 780.00 + VAT
Swell Oboe £ 1,950.00 + VAT
The organ is included in the National Pipe Organ Register (NPOR). The entry can be viewed here.
